#DesignedToMove with Tanya Vanthuyne

This is the inaugural post of #DesignedToMove, a new series were we talk to the people that inspire us on what moves them and keeps them searching for that next adventure.

When we saw Tanya Vanthuyne tag one of her instagram pictures with our handle, we knew we had to find out more about her. Her profile is filled with incredible images of the Canadian outdoors and Tanya herself right in the middle of it all. So we got in touch and she was kind enough to share her story, where she spoke to us on a whole range of topics from her favorite ways to stay active to how she keeps her life interesting.

Where is home?
Edson, Alberta Canada is home for me. It's pretty much dead centre in the middle of Edmonton, Alberta and Jasper, the Rocky Mountains. I find it such an ideal place to live … small town, the mountains only 1 1/2 hours away (which is where I spend most of my time) and the city is the opposite directions if you ever feel like those quick shopping trips.

What do you do in your spare time?
I like to stay as active as I can in my spare time. I try and bike a lot. Hike and venture to as many places as possible. I truly love the beauty of nature and that fact that as cliché as it is, it really does clear your mind.  I like that feeling. I play softball as well in the summer … I have to admit that I have a slight competitive nature and like to be challenged. I experienced rock climbing last year, in which I am definitely up for again this year and have a Stand up Paddle board on order, so will definitely be on the water often this year. I bring my son along with me on most adventures, he is always up for the outdoors.

How do you keep your life interesting?
I keep life interesting by laughing as much as I possibly can. I prefer to have a smile on my face. Venturing to as many different places as I can, brining along the people that will test my comfort zone. My husband is definitely one of them. Keeping an open mind on life and adventures and new cultures. Ensure that I have family time, girl time and me time … and of course "LOVE" time ;)

Fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
I think that I am pretty funny and love making people laugh. Only my good friends would know that. First impression, I am told I am intimidating and maybe not approachable — I guess I would be the typical don't judge a book by its cover :)

What keeps you motivated on a daily basis?
I am self-motivated, I like to stay in shape and healthy not only for myself but for my family and the type of lifestyle that I want to continue living. My husband is "fit" himself and I would have to say that if I was every lacking motivation, he would be supporting me to get back at it. I like to feel good and look good — I would think that most people do. Although I think that everyone has a different vision, which I think is a healthy way of living. Be the person you want to be for you.

What does being active mean to you?
Being active for me is definitely getting out and about. Hiking, biking, softball, walks, snowboarding, rock climbing, camping, boot camps, fitness classes, cross country skiing. Learning new things, experiencing new things, broadening your vision on life, meeting new people. Challenging yourself.

What do you do to keep fit?
Other than everything that I mentioned already, I stay fit by eating properly. I am one of those people that could eat the same thing everyday and it wouldn't phase me. If I want to get toned, I will stick to a meal plan for 2-3 months and then make lifestyle adjustments to maintain. I love my lifestyle and do not sacrifice anything to stay fit — I am very aware of my body.

How would you describe your style?
I would say that my style is quite trendy.  I don't shy away from anything that "I" would feel comfortable wearing because most other people aren't wearing it. I like beanies, headbands, side braids and combat boots. But also have no problem pulling high heels, cute dresses — with maybe a slight relaxed hippy look.  Haha … it's hard to explain!  Although I like to look nice, I never turn down an opportunity for adventure.

What attracted you to 8120?
I like the style of 8120, it fits seamlessly into my wardrobe. I really like the length of the articles of clothing that I have. It's not just a plain jane style … definitely has character and that's what I look for.

Is there an 8120 article of clothing that you can’t live without?
I wouldn’t be able to live without the orion blue zip-up now that I have it. It lets me have the mobility that I need to do whatever I venture off doing that day … light feel but has the warmth that I am needing.

Most adventurous thing you’ve done so far?
Most adventurous thing that I have done so far is probably rock climbing. My heart stopped a couple times — an indescribable feeling for me. It was a challenge that definitely pushed me not only physically, but mentally. I would highly recommend it.

What’s your next adventure for 2015 going to be?
I’ll have plenty of adventures in 2015. I am planning to explore more of Canada from BC to as far as PEI for a music festival. Adventure isn't just about the being in nature for me, its also about all aspects of life experiences. Should be a good year.

You can follow Tanya’s adventures on Instagram at her profile @t.l.vanthuyne. We cannot recommend it enough.
