Continuing our #designedtomove series, this week we spoke to Janell Mullen about her motivation to start her own blog and how she keeps her life interesting.
Where is home?
I have been living in Los Angeles for the past 5 years.
Is there a quote that describes you the most?
"Find your tribe. Go on a living spree. Repeat." — Robin Arzon
Title of a song that describes your personality?
We Dem Boyz by Wiz Khalifa because I am a tomboy tried and true.
How do you keep your life interesting?
I try something new regularly, whether its hang out with someone new, try a new workout, or research a new topic. I like to keep it fresh.
What do you do in your spare time?
I write for my blog Sweat Talk and spend a lot of my time being active. When I am at home in the evenings, I tend to read.
Tell us more about your blog, Sweat Talk.
I started Sweat Talk less than a year ago because I needed a creative outlet. I also launched Sweat Talk because I wanted to motivate others and build a community around getting fit and bettering ourselves. When I first started, the posts came easily so I knew I would have a lot of material for a long time.
What can readers expect from your blog within the near future?
My readers can expect the blog to keep growing. I am in the process of Trademarking the term "Sweat Talk" and it's tagline, "I feel prettiest when I sweat" to protect the integrity of the brand. (Feel free to support the cause, I will soon be launching the campaign via Kickstarter!) The content will cover all things fitness, fashion, and living a healthy lifestyle. I hope to travel more and give readers insight to studios and gyms outside of Los Angeles. I also hope to launch a little e-commerce component of the site. Through the sales of Sweat Talk swag (re: beanies, tee, and tanks), I would love to grow my brand. I will also continue to reach out to other independent brands (such as 8120) and individuals that reflect the same values of Sweat Talk and continue to feature inspiring people and companies. I hope to continue to build a community that believes and shares the benefits of living healthy and getting fit.
Fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
I ran my first marathon when I was still in high school and became a certified personal trainer soon after.
What keeps you motivated on a daily basis?
Other inspirational people. Dreamers.
What does being ‘active’ mean to you?
It means moving and it means moving often. Being active doesn't just mean going to the gym and repeating the same thing. It is having the ability to do different things that challenge you physically. What I consider to be "active" is the person that regularly saves time for sweating.
What do you do to keep fit?
I've been a runner since high school. Now, I do a lot of cross-training. I box. I do yoga at least once a week. I like HIIT and am picking up more weight training as of late. I like to hike the trails in LA.
How would you describe your style?
It's a bit classic (I have a lot of grey, black, and white items in my closet), but with a pop of boldness. Like an all black outfit with bright trendy sneakers. I like to incorporate athletics into what I wear. I like mixing prints of the same hues and I like wearing sneakers.
What attracted you to 8120?
I like its clean, modern design. I also follow 8120 on Instagram and having gone to the Urban Planning School for my Master's, I appreciate the architectural influence on the product design.
Is there an 8120 article of clothing that you can’t live without?
Yes! On the chilly, early morning runs the Women's Bulky Neck is it.
Most adventurous thing you’ve done so far?
I packed up my bags with no job, no car, and one friend and moved to California right after undergrad at University of Connecticut. I haven't left since!
What’s your next adventure for 2015 going to be?
I have a new hiking book that outlines hundreds of hikes in and around the LA area. I would like to do them all and run most of them. I would also like to continue to develop my brand, Sweat Talk, take risks with entrepreneurship, and see where it takes me.
