Continuing our #designedtomove series, this week we spoke to Alexis Novak, a yoga sculpt instructor about the key to obtaining a balanced lifestyle, upcoming fitness challenges, and what keeps her inspired and focused on a daily basis.
Where is home?
I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. I love Colorado and miss my family dearly. I try and consider "home" wherever my body is though. Locations are sentimental, but my only true place of constant sanctuary is within myself!
I am a private and group yoga sculpt instructor. I work one-on-one with people in their homes as well as guide group classes at a local studio in Silver Lake. My job title is "yoga instructor" but I feel like my job is to lead people to explore the waves within themselves that they normally wouldn't. I assist people to ride their edges, and inquire from within. I work very closely with people daily, so I get to connect with them about all aspects of their lives. What we work through on the mat, expands with them off the mat. I absolutely love my job and will show up for my students until the end of time.
Favorite yoga pose?
Sorry students, but plank. It is SO POWERFUL! It is the most despised pose, but the concept of holding your own body weight up and how challenging it is really does something for me. All the muscles are involved. It’s an all-or-nothing pose, and I dig that!
Any tips for aspiring yogis?
Try it all. I would encourage new or aspiring yogis to keep trying new places, teachers, and styles until they find the one that fits them, there are SO MANY different types. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and do research on what you're practicing. It will give you the full benefits of your yoga experience.
Fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
Most people don't know that I love animals. I really enjoy David Attenborough documentaries, and most of my iPhone's photo library is full of animal pictures.
What keeps you motivated on a daily basis?
My students keep me motivated on a daily basis. I wake up ready to go to work knowing confidently that there will be a group of like-minded people ready to work with me. I stay motivated also through staying connected with my personal yoga relationship. Taking classes from other instructors allows me to be in the role of the student, and continue to work on being a better version of myself through my own yoga practice.
What’s your proudest moment to date?
I don't have one big defining moment. I find myself in a state of gratitude and excitement when I think of the life I am fortunate enough to lead. I have worked hard to build the beautiful, strong, and kind yoga community I get to surround myself with daily at "work." I would say that I am pretty proud of that.
What does being active mean to you?
Being active to me, is the conscious refusal of being stagnant. In any facet of your life, if you are making an effort to not stay in the same place you are stimulating some form of growth. The word active means movement and living.
What inspired you to start the #AlexisMadeMeDoit challenge?
I was inspired to start the Hot Body/Chill Mind Challenge (#AlexisMadeMeDoIt) by seeing a ton of traffic around people's "jump start" summer diets, and bikini body hype. I looked around and couldn't find anything that was a mind-body connection challenge. I think it is super important to take care of your physical health, but mental health is JUST as important. A beautiful body is nothing without some sort of brainwork behind it. I wanted people to use the hashtag on social media for accountability and to motivate those they interact with to use the daily challenges and victories to promote a healthier and balanced lifestyle.
Any upcoming fitness challenges?
I am hoping to run another challenge soon in the future. I am leading a 2-day intensive 'BODY BURST" workshop at One Down Dog Yoga Studio in Silver Lake, CA on July 18 – 19th. It will be two days of tough love goodness! Yoga, weights, cardio, core, meditation, goal-setting and more!
How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as functional. I can appreciate fashion and love looking at other people's trendy outfits, but I personally like to feel comfortable in my clothes by keeping it casual and weather appropriate.
What attracted you to 8120?
I loved the athletic functionality of the styles. They were refined and I could really workout in the clothing. I LOVE my ORION zip-up! The thumb holes are perfect for when I am on a run, or to slip on before or after yoga!
